Homeless Benefit Update

It has occurred to me that one of the omissions that was made during my blog-hiatus was that of an update with respect to the Feed The Homeless III Benefit that was held November 25th at Zaphod’s.

Well, here it is…

We had a great turnout of enthusiastic and generous supporters. Alan Neal from CBC was a most excellent host, with an easy, effortless humour and red velvet pants (awesome). Paul Dewar, Ottawa Centre MP, spoke passionately and eloquently about homelessness and the need for action, including in the House of Commons. The musical performances of Ana Miura, Mile Over Mecca and F!ghtF!ghtF!ght were all amazing, keeping people up near the stage boppin’ along the whole time.

We also had additional fundraising activities for the night, including a compilation cd of local music (also downloadable), which is actually really good (honestly, I don’t usually dig that kind of stuff, but I loved it) and which sold out very early on in the evening. Santa came by, a little drunk mind you, but in good spirits, for some old school polaroids with Christmas enthusiasts. And finally, what gathering of people is complete without a raffle? None. So we had one.

All in all, we needed to raise about $1,000 and we exceeded our target by $2,000 – the rest of which goes directly to Shepherds of Good Hope, a worthy and integral part of our community, notwithstanding their lax policy on volunteer selection (this is self-deprecating for those of you who need that little extra clarification…).

So… this is my thanks to all of you who came to participate, celebrate and support the event! See you next year!
